Softball splits doubleheader at UMBC

Bearcats win opener 9-6, edged 3-2 in nightcap

BALTIMORE, MD. – Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen homered twice and junior first baseman Emma Lawson homered and drove in three runs, highlighting Binghamton's split against UMBC in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond at UMBC. Both games were decided in eight innings - with the Bearcats (17-10, 3-1 AE) winning 9-6 in the first game but the Retrievers (9-21, 3-2 AE) getting even with a 3-2 victory in the second game.

Allen hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7) during the day and scored a team-best three times. She now leads the America East with eight home runs so far this season and is tied for first with 24 RBI. Allen also ranks first with a .630 slugging percentage.

Lawson, meanwhile, hit .429 (3-for-7) against UMBC to extend her hitting streak to six games. She also drew a walk and recorded a sacrifice fly to finish with an .857 on-base percentage. For the season, Lawson ranks first in the conference with a .388 batting average as well as a .452 on-base percentage. She has also homered four times and is tied for first with Allen in RBI (24).

Graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter also went 4-for-7 (.429) at the plate to extend her hitting streak to six games. She also pitched three scoreless innings in relief to get the decision in the first game.

In the opener, UMBC appeared to take control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 6-4. Jerzie Nutile capped the scoring with a two-out grand slam.

Binghamton, however, came right back to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Walter. After a scoreless seventh inning, Allen led off the top of the eighth inning with a home run over the left-field fence. Lawson and freshman designated player Carey followed with RBI singles, padding the lead to 9-6.

Walter then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve the win. It was her first decision of the season. Taking the loss was Kaya Matter, who is now 5-8.

The first game was also highlighted by a pair of RBI triples - by junior outfielder Bella Farina and sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig. The two triples by Binghamton in game one represents its season high.

In the second game, Lawson hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead. UMBC, however, plated an unearned run in the bottom of the same inning.

Allen answered by leading off the top of the second inning with her second homer in as many games. The Retrievers then deadlocked the game at 2-2 on a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning by Haley Luginbill.

From there, junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy and UMBC starter Maggie Frisvold were locked in a pitchers duel. It was Frisvold who eventually helped her own cause with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kennedy surrendered only two earned runs in 7.1 innings and struck out eight batters. Her record, however, fell to 5-7 while Frisvold improved to 3-5.

Carey and graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos each went 3-for-9 (.333) during the doubleheader.

Binghamton and UMBC conclude their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
