Allen Homers Four Times in Softball Sweep

Bearcats win 7-2, 8-0 at Maine, improve to 22-11

ORONO. Maine. - Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen hit four home runs, powering Binghamton (22-11, 8-2 AE) to a 7-2, 8-0 sweep over Maine (7-29, 0-11 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Friday at the Labat Softball Field. With the victories, the Bearcats have won five straight games and are assured of taking their third conference series of the year.

Allen, who homered twice in each game, finished the day 5-for-7 (.714) and drove in six runs. She now has her second three-game home run streak of the season and leads the America East with both 14 home runs and 34 RBI. She is just one home run off the 2010 Binghamton record of 15, set by Jessica Phillips in 2010.

In addition to Allen, the Bearcats also got home runs on Friday from freshman designated player Rachel Carey in the first game as well as senior third baseman Sarah Rende in the nightcap. With their six home runs today, Binghamton has now homered in a program-record 11 straight games and has 45 home runs so far this season.

Carey finished the day 5-for-8 (.625) with her home run and pair of extra-base hits. She has now homered 10 times this season and has 28 RBI. Carey is the first Binghamton freshman to homer 10 times in a season since Phillips during her 2010 campaign.

Rende now has a career-high seven home runs this season as well as 20 during her career. She also now has 101 career hits. Rende finished the doubleheader against the Black Bears with a pair of RBI.

The Bearcats also got solid pitching from juniors Brianna Roberts and Olivia Kennedy as well as freshman Savanna McHale. Kennedy tossed a two-high shutout in the second game while Roberts went 5.1 innings in the opener to nail down her conference-best 12th win of the year. McHale, meanwhile, finished off the first game by not allowing an earned run over the final 1.2 innings.

Allen's first home run of the day was a solo shot in the top of the first inning of the opener, which gave the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, Allen was on base when Carey drilled her two-run homer, extending the lead to 5-0. Later in the same frame, Rende was credited with an RBI after reaching first base on an error as a run scored.

Maine broke the shutout with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but Allen led off the next inning with her second homer of the game.

Roberts is now 12-2 while the loss was tagged to Alysen Reith, who is now 4-15.

Allen and Carey had six of the Bearcats' seven hits during the first game.

Rende's solo home run in the top of the third inning of the finale broke open a scoreless game. The Bearcats then tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning. Allen drilled a two-run shot and sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig had a two-run single during the frame.

Graduate student Brianna Santos, who finished the day 3-for-7 (.429), tripled home the Bearcats' sixth run in the top of the sixth inning. Allen then capped the scoring with another two-run homer one inning later.

Kennedy, meanwhile, allowed just five total base runners and recorded seven strikeouts to improve her record to 6-8. Taking the loss was Madison Simmerman, who is now 3-9.

As a team, Binghamton hit .316 during the two games. Defensively, Binghamton did not commit an error in either contest.

Junior first baseman Emma Lawson drove in her 32nd run of the season with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning of the opener. She continues to lead the Bearcats with a .374 batting average.

Saturday's series finale has been moved up to 10 a.m.

NOTES: The previous Binghamton record for most consecutive games with a home run was 10, set by the 2016 squad and tied last season … Rende is the 26th player in Binghamton program history to record 100+ hits during their career.
