Baseball Falls to Bryant in Series Finale

Bearcats’ three home runs not enough in 6-5 loss

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton baseball team fell to Bryant 6-5 in the series finale Sunday at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.

Freddy Forgione, Evin Sullivan, and Zach Rogacki each homered for the Bearcats (14-17, 5-7 America East). But Gavin Greger's solo home run for the Bulldogs (15-15-1, 5-4 America East) in the eighth inning proved to be the difference.

Binghamton got on the board first when in the opening inning, Zack Kent was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Matt Bolton. Trailing 1-0, Bryant responded in the third with back-to-back home runs from Gavin Noriega and Drew Wyers to jump ahead 3-1.

Forgione brought the Bearcats back in it with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, his sixth home run of the season, to make it 3-2 Bryant. The Bulldogs then posted two runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2, but Sullivan got those runs right back for the Bearcats in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to make it 5-4.

Connor Griffin kept the Bearcats in the game by retiring six of the seven batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings. His efforts were rewarded when Rogacki tied the game up at five in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to right field, his third homer of the season.

Brady Lesiak took the mound for Binghamton in the eighth inning. Greger quickly gave the Bulldogs the lead with his home run to right field to put Bryant back ahead 6-5. Lesiak settled down after that by striking out a combined four batters in the next two innings, a career high for the freshman.

Needing a run in the bottom of the ninth to extend the game, both Logan Haskell and Bolton helped the Bearcats get off on the right foot with back-to-back singles. Rogacki moved Bolton and pinch runner Sam Miller to second and third respectively with a sacrifice bunt after that. Bryant then intentionally walked Devan Bade to load the bases with one out. Sullivan stepped up to the plate with a chance to walk it off for Binghamton. But the designated hitter hit a ground ball to second baseman Zac Zyons, who helped the Bulldogs turn the 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Binghamton welcomes Cornell to the Bearcats Baseball Complex for its next game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
