VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman pinch hitter
Steven Kraus delivered a 2-out, 2-run home run to tie the game in the eighth and sophomore outfielder
Todd Abraham coaxed a ninth-inning base-on-balls to lift Binghamton baseball (18-17, 8-7 America East) to an 8-7 walk-off win over visiting NJIT (18-19, 7-5 AE) Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium.
The win, Binghamton's fourth in a row, completed a weekend sweep of the Highlanders, who came to Vestal in first place.
Down 7-5 in the eighth, Abraham began the rally with a 1-out walk. Two batters later, Kraus was sent to the plate by head coach
Tim Sinicki and drove the first pitch he saw well over the wall in right field for a memorable first collegiate home run and a 7-7 tie.
In the ninth, freshman center fielder
Matt Bolton kept the game knotted when he leapt to make a great catch at the center field wall. Sophomore reliever
Jake Dally worked around a 1-out walk with a strikeout and lineout to set up the dramatic bottom of the ninth. Senior third baseman
Devan Bade opened with a single up the middle. A walk to senior DH
Evin Sullivan, sacrifice by graduate first baseman
Freddy Forgione and an intentional walk to junior second baseman
Zack Kent loaded the bases. Abraham took the walk from NJIT's sixth pitcher of the game, setting off a celebration.
The rally capped a wild 3+ hour game that saw the Bearcats jump ahead 4-1 before NJIT rallied with five middle-inning runs to pull ahead. But three runs in the closing two frames tilted the result back to the home side.
Bade went 3-for-5 and Kent drove in two runs to spark a 14-hit attack. Bolton went 2-for-5 with an RBI and in the process, raised his season batting average to .371, third in the conference and tops among rookies. Bolton led off the Binghamton first inning with his fifth home run of the season.
Graduate starter
Ryan Packard worked 4.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs with five strikeouts. Senior
Caden Rothbaum got two important outs in the eighth, inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded - Binghamton's third twin-killing of the game.
The Bearcats next head up I-81 to face Le Moyne Tuesday afternoon.
