Softball Splits DH with Cornell

Bearcats win opener 6-2, lose 4-1 in nightcap

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior first baseman Emma Lawson and sophomore catcher Elisa Allen each drove in three runs, highlighting Binghamton's split against Cornell in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats (26-12) won the first game 6-2 but were defeated 4-1 by the Big Red (16-16) in the finale.

Allen went 3-for-7 (.429) during the day with a home run to go along with her three RBI. Lawson, meanwhile, was 3-for-6 (.500) with a pair of doubles.

Graduate student Lindsey Walter, meanwhile, hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7) and scored a team-high two runs.

In the opener, Lawson and Allen staked Binghamton to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lawson doubled home Walter and scored one batter later on Allen's two-run home run over the left field fence.

For Allen, it was her 15th home run of the year, which tied the Binghamton single-season program record. Jessica Phillips originally set the current mark with 15 home runs during the 2010 season.

Lawson's second RBI double of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning and gave the Bearcats a 4-1 advantage.

Nursing a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bearcats used a RBI bunt single by Walter and a sacrifice fly by Lawson to plate a pair of insurance runs.

Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts went the first 5.0 innings to improve her record to 14-2. Freshman Savanna McHale, meanwhile, tossed two scoreless innings to lock up her second save of the year.

Mila Fiordalsi was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 7-5.

In the second game, however, it was Kyrie Denny limiting Binghamton to one run on six hits in a complete-game victory.

Allen gave the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead with a RBI double in the bottom of the third inning. Walter scored on the play.

The Big Red took the lead for good on a two-run home run by Sydney Stapf in the top of the fourth inning. Their final two runs came courtesy of a wild pitch in the fifth inning and a double steal two innings later.

Denny is now 8-10 while sophomore pitcher Delaney Glover fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos finished the day 2-for-6 (.333). Both of her hits came in the first game, which increased her career-high hitting streak to 15 games. That streak, which ended in the second game, represents the third-longest stretch in Binghamton program history. Deannie Plemon (2010) and Gabby Bracchi (2014) remain tied at 17 games for the longest hitting streak in program history.

Sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig finished the day 2-for-5 (.400) with a double while senior third baseman Sarah Rende was 2-for-6 (.333).

Lawson now has a conference-best 38 RBI while Allen is right behind her with 37 RBI.

As a team, the Bearcats hit .321 during the doubleheader.

The attendance of 351 fans for the two games represented the 10th-highest attendance in the 12-year history of the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Binghamton hosts a three-game series against UMBC on Saturday-Sunday.
