Baseball rips 14 runs, gains doubleheader split at UMBC

Bearcats drop opener 11-6 but answer bell in nightcap with 14-1 win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Visiting Binghamton baseball (14-14, 5-4 AE) exploded for 14 runs on 15 hits to beat UMBC (11-14, 4-5 America East) 14-1 and gain a split of a doubleheader Saturday at Alumni Field. The Retrievers took the opener 11-6.

In Game 2, the Bearcats scored in six of the seven innings before the game was halted due to the 10-run rule. Already up 8-1, Binghamton plated four more when junior second baseman Zack Kent blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning. It was the Bearcats' 10th home run of the three-game series.

Binghamton scored once in the first, four runs in the second, two in the fourth, five in the fifth, one in the sixth and the final run in the seventh.

Kent had two hits and drove in a career-high six runs. Senior third baseman Devan Bade went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Senior DH Zach Rogacki had three hits and an RBI and senior catcher Evin Sullivan drove in a pair. Junior shortstop Mike Stellrecht and freshman center fielder Matt Bolton had two hits each. Freshman pinch hitter Braylen Gonzalez recorded his first collegiate RBI with a run-scoring grounder in the seventh.

On the hill, four Bearcat pitchers combined to contain UMBC on one run. Freshman Vincent Luther worked 3.0 innings and allowed just one run with two strikeouts.

In the seven-inning opener, Binghamton led 5-2 before the Retrievers used a seven-run fourth inning to take control. UMBC then tallied twice in the sixth before the Bearcats closed the scoring with a run in the seventh.

The Bearcats erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the second and three in the third. But after bunching six hits in the two innings, Binghamton was held to three hits the rest of the way. For the second straight game, UMBC used a 7+ run inning to turn the tide.

Sullivan belted two home runs and drove in three. He hit a leadoff homer in the second inning and followed with a two-run shot in the third. He now has five home runs on the season. Rogacki had a double and two RBI and Bolton collected two hits.

Binghamton returns home to host Le Moyne in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon.
