Baseball pushes past Maine in late innings, 6-2

Bearcats take two of three, move into tie for third place entering final series

ORONO, Maine - Senior right fielder Zach Rogacki snapped a 2-2 tie with a seventh-inning RBI triple and Binghamton baseball (23-22, 11-10 America East) added three runs in the ninth to defeat Maine (20-27, 13-11 AE) 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.

The win gave the Bearcats the weekend series and also gave them four wins in six games against the Black Bears, providing the tiebreak edge if the teams wind up even in the America East standings. With three games remaining (home vs. UAlbany), Binghamton is tied with NJIT for third place, with Maine sitting just ahead in the coveted No. 2 position (first-round bye). Two wins would allow the Bearcats to catch the Black Bears.

Freshman starter Vincent Luther went 4.1 innings and held Maine to two runs on three hits. Luther struck our four before giving way to sophomore Conner Griffin, who pitched 1.2 scoreless frames with two strikeouts for his second win of the weekend. Sophomore reliever Jake Dally went 2.2 scoreless innings and sophomore Jackson Mitchell got the final out on a comebacker. The three Bearcat relievers combined for 4.2 scoreless innings of work.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh, freshman center fielder Matt Bolton drew a 1-out walk. Then after an eight-pitch at-bat, Rogacki powered a 3-2 pitch into the right field corner for an RBI triple and a 3-2 Binghamton lead.

The Bearcats used a double play grounder to keep Maine off the board in the seventh and then Dally struck out the side in the eighth. In the ninth, Binghamton tacked on three insurance runs. Junior shortstop Mike Stellrecht led off with a walk and with two out, Rogacki doubled, putting runners on second and third. Senior third baseman Devan Bade ripped a ball off the third baseman's glove to plate two runs. Senior catcher Evin Sullivan brought home the final run with an RBI single.

The Black Bears put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth before Mitchell earned his team-leading fourth save of the season.

Rogacki went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple and boosted his season batting average to .376, second-highest in the conference. He also produced a stellar diving catch in foul territory in the second inning.

Graduate first baseman Freddy Forgione contributed a 2-run double in the third inning that erased an early 1-0 Black Bears lead. Bade had two hits.

Binghamton hosts UAlbany Thursday night to begin a three-game set that will finish off the regular season. The Bearcats will then head back to Orono for the six-team America East Tournament, which begins May 21.
