VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior outfielder
Logan Haskell hit a walkoff 3-run home run to cap an improbable comeback and give Binghamton baseball (25-22, 13-10 America East) a 15-14 win over UAlbany (19-30, 9-14 AE) Friday night at Bearcats Baseball Complex.
The Bearcats outhit Albany 17-7 but gave up an 11-run inning (3rd) and trailed 13-5 before mounting a ferocious rally. The win allowed Binghamton to overtake Maine and move closer to the coveted No. 2 tournament seed, with its accompanying first-round bye. The Bearcats and NJIT (13-10) are tied for second in the standings and Binghamton gains the edge if the two teams finish tied after tomorrow's games.
Down 14-11 heading to the ninth, Binghamton did its damage with one out. Senior DH
Evin Sullivan singled and graduate first baseman
Freddy Forgione drew a walk. Junior second baseman
Zack Kent lashed a hard single off the first baseman to score Sullivan and make it 14-12. That brought Haskell to the plate. The fourth-year veteran worked a 3-2 count before hooking a deep ball inside the foul pole in left for the game-winning 3-run shot - his fifth of the season.
The walkoff ended a bizarre 3+ hour game that featured an early 4-0 Binghamton lead, the aforementioned 11-run Albany third inning, a game delay when the Great Danes' pitcher was vomiting on the mound, and the Bearcats scoring 10 runs in their final three innings to secure their fourth win in the last five games.
Down 13-5, Binghamton began its rally with three runs in the seventh. Haskell (3-for-4, 5 RBI) began the charge with a leadoff double. Sophomore outfielder
Todd Abraham delivered an RBI single to make it 13-6. Three batters later, senior third baseman
Devan Bade sent a 2-out, 2-run double to left center to make it 13-8.
After Albany tacked on another run in the top of the eighth, Binghamton answered with three runs to pull within three, 14-11. Haskell ripped a 2-run double and Abraham added an RBI single, setting the stage for the dramatic ninth.
Abraham went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and both Bade and Forgione collected two hits and two RBI. Forgione ran his consecutive games reaching base streak to 31 - one shy of tying the school record set by Hall of Famer Jake Thomas. Kent and freshman center fielder
Matt Bolton had two hits apiece.
Junior
Dan McAliney (W, 3-0), Binghamton's sixth pitcher of the game, worked the ninth for the win.
