Softball Defeated 9-2 by No. 16 Stanford in NCAAs

Bearcats to play Weber State Saturday at 6:30 p.m. EST

EUGENE, OR. – Returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015, Binghamton (36-13) was defeated 9-2 by No. 16 Stanford (41-11) in an opening-round game at the Oregon Regional on Friday afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium. The Bearcats will face Weber State in an elimination game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Stanford came into the game ranked second in the nation with a .357 batting average. The Cardinal finished the game with 10 hits - five of which went for extra bases - and drew eight walks.

The host Cardinals got a pair of RBI from both Caelen Koch and Emily Jones. Koch also finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. In addition, Kyra Chan pitched the first five innings to collect the win and also scored a pair of runs herself.

For Binghamton, graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter went 2-for-3 while senior third baseman Sarah Rende was 1-for-2 with a walk and scored a run.

The brightest spot for the Bearcats, however, was freshman pitcher Savanna McHale. She tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out three batters in the process.

Down 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Binghamton plated a pair of runs. Rende scored on a throwing error and junior first baseman Emma Lawson had an RBI ground out. For the season, Lawson now has 48 RBI.

The Cardinals built their lead up to 9-2 when McHale entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. She promptly got the Bearcats out of a jam and was able to extend the game the full seven innings.

Binghamton was held to three hits but managed to draw five walks and had three other batters get hit by a pitch. The Bearcats, however, left 10 runners on base.

"It was a tough game for us," head coach Jess Bump said. "But I am happy that we were able to extend the game and play the full seven innings. Stanford is one of the best offenses in the country so I was happy with how our pitchers hung in there and also our defense did a pretty good job at the end of the game."

Chung improved to 15-5 with the win while the loss was tagged to junior pitcher Brianna Roberts, whose record fell to 21-3.

NOTE: Weber State lost 8-0 in five innings to the host Ducks in the other opening round game. Oregon is currently ranks sixth in the nation.
