Softball Sweeps UAlbany 4-3 and 6-5

Bearcats conclude regular-season with program-best 16 AE wins

ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman designated player Rachel Carey homered and recorded four RBI while junior outfielder Bella Farina drove in three runs, powering Binghamton (33-12, 16-2 AE) to a 4-3, 6-5 sweep over UAlbany (19-24, 9-8 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Albany Softball Field. The victories wrap up the regular-season for both teams because Saturday's series finale was canceled due to the impending weather forecast.

Binghamton, which clinched the America East regular-season title last week, now has a program-best 16 conference wins. In addition, the Bearcats' 33 victories tie the third-most wins in program history.

Carey, who finished the day 2-for-5 (.400) and drew three walks, drove in all of her runs during the second game. She belted a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, which put the Bearcats ahead 5-1 and followed up with an RBI single one inning later, padding the lead to 6-1.

Down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Great Danes clawed back with four runs. With the tying run on third base, however, junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy was able to record the final out of the game.

Kennedy's record is now 10-8 while Haley Weiczerzak drops to 3-7.

Farina, meanwhile, had the key hit in the first game. With the Bearcats nursing a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, she stroked a two-out, two-run double.

The Great Danes pulled to within 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run single by Taylor Quinn. Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts, however, was able to strike out the final batter of the game.

With an 18-2 record, Roberts has tied the second-highest, single-season victory total in Binghamton program history. Charlene Cook also won 18 games - in both 1995 and 1997. The school record of 19 wins was set by Amanda Schilling in 1994.

The Bearcats were able to force extra innings in the first game when sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig's RBI double deadlocked the game at 1-1. She ended the day with a hit in each game.

Despite not allowing an earned run, Kate Powers was tagged with the loss in the opener, dropping her record to 11-7.

Farina's other RBI came in the top of the first inning of the second game, when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen, meanwhile, had only one official at bat during the doubleheader. She reached base seven times, however, drawing five walks and getting hit by a pitch twice.

For the season, Carey now has 11 home runs and 35 RBI. She enters the postseason with a .313 batting average.

The America East will release the complete conference tournament bracket on Saturday. As the top seed, Binghamton is locked into the 11 a.m. second-round game on Thursday against either the No 4 or No. 5 seed.
