Women's soccer knocks off Marist 2-1

Davis tallies goal, assist and Victoriano nets first collegiate goal as Bearcats improve to 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (3-1) tallied a goal in each half and controlled play in a 2-1 victory over host Marist (0-4) Thursday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The win was the Bearcats' third by the same 2-1 margin.

Binghamton opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Junior back Sophia Garofalo eluded a Red Foxes forward near midfield and sent a long ball to the left, where sophomore forward Jahkaya Davis collected it. Davis then rolled a square ball into the middle, where freshman midfielder Ale Victoriano met it with a crisp 12-yard shot to the lower corner. It was the first collegiate goal for Victoriano, who played 24 strong minutes off the bench.

The Bearcats held a 12-0 shots bulge in the first half and added seven corner kicks to their offensive surge.

Just 3:19 into the second half, Binghamton doubled its lead when Davis and junior forward Paige Luke combined for a beautiful goal. Davis began the play with a strong dribble up the left side and into the Marist defensive third. She and Luke then executed a perfect give-and-go with Luke's return ball rolling behind two defenders and sending Davis thru on goal. She dribbled toward goal before tucking a 10-yard shot just inside the far post for her third tally of the season and a 2-0 Bearcats lead.

Marist made it a game just four minutes later, however, capitalizing on a giveaway deep in the Binghamton defensive third. But the Bearcats kept up their possession advantage and held on for the win.

"We were really pleased with the intensity and level we had for the first 50 minutes," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "But we have to take care of moments and not give away opportunities to opponents because then the game becomes a grind as we saw today. We can be more mature in managing games in those times. We will be happy of course to get this 'W' but we do need to learn from the experience as we go forward. We are looking forward to coming back home and taking on a tough GW side this Sunday."

The final shots count was 14-4. Junior starting keeper Rebecca Kessler didn't have to make save in the first half and lowered her season goals against average to 1.00. Freshman Bella Grace Dunn made two saves in the final 45 minutes.

Binghamton hosts Atlantic 10 member George Washington at noon Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
