Women's basketball picks up second-straight victory in conference play

Bearcats sit atop of the AE standings with 6-1 record

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's basketball (14-6, 6-1 AE) goes 2-for-2 on the week after picking up a 62-57 victory over Maine (10-11, 5-3 AE) at the Events Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats are 6-1 in conference play for the first time since 2010-11. Binghamton also continues to dominate at home, improving to a 9-1 record on the year.

Freshman guard Carletta Bennett, who tied her career high with 13 points today, got off a three-point shot off the backboard before the shot clock ran out to give Binghamton a two-score possession with five seconds remaining in the game.

"We knew they were going to be aggressive," C. Bennett said on Binghamton's last possession. "We saw they were going to double-team from both sides of the paint, so it opened up space, and I just screamed, and Yanniah saw me, and I just threw it up."

"An unbelievable effort all around by the team today," head coach Mary Grimes said postgame. "My message to the team was to box out, and we held them to just two offensive rebounds."

In the first seconds of the game, Kaia Goode picked off Maine's first possession and scored a breakaway layup. She set the tone from the first play and finished with four steals in a big defensive game by the senior guard.

"She's a great on-ball defender," Coach Grimes said, praising the efforts of Ka. Goode's game today. "That's one of the reasons I recruited her. I think she did the things she needed to do when attacking the hoop to draw those early fouls."

From there, Maine settled in and started to take the offensive advantage. The Black Bears shot 53.3% and led by as much as 10 in the first quarter of play. Maine Forward Adrianna Smith, who leads the league in scoring, had 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the first half.

The Bearcats turned up the heat in the second quarter on both sides of the court. Binghamton went on a 12-3 run in the last 5:31 of the first half and held the Black Bears to just eight points in the second quarter. Ka. Goode led the offensive front for Binghamton in the second quarter with five free throws and three assists to finalize the first 20 minutes of play, 37-30 in Binghamton's favor.

The chemistry between Meghan Casey and Kendall Bennett was on point in today's game. All three of Casey's assists came from feeding bounce passes and perfect floaters to K. Bennett in the paint.

K. Bennett notched her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She now moves into a tie for third for most double-doubles in a single season in program history (D1 era).

The Bearcats' offense ignited in the second quarter, scoring 24 points, and continued to put the pedal to the metal in the third quarter with a 20-point quarter that saw them establish their biggest lead of the game at 53-39.

Bella Pucci led the team in scoring with K. Bennett with 14 points in Thursday's game. She has now scored at least 10+ points in eight straight competitions and in all America East games played so far.

Maine was able to tally some scores and close the game back into single digits with eight minutes left to play in the final quarter. Despite the aggressive offensive attack from the Black Bears, the Bearcats were able to hold on with great defensive work and maintain their lead to capture their America East-leading sixth victory of the season.

"We're going to enjoy this win for 24 hours and then get ready to move on," coach Grimes implied. "We got a big game against Bryant. It's the biggest game of the season because it's our next game and that's how we treat it."

Binghamton travels to Bryant (14-6, 4-3 AE) for a Thursday night game with a start time slated for 6 p.m.
