LANCASTER, Pa. - The Binghamton wrestling team (4-1, 2-0 EIWA) sent three of its wrestlers to the podium at the David H. Lehman '68 Franklin & Marshall Open Friday at the Alumni Sports & Fitness Center.
Mikey Squires (5th at 197 lbs.),
Trent Sibble (5th at 285 lbs.) and
Carson Wagner (6th at 125 lbs.) each finished in the top six in their respective weight class. This is the third time Binghamton has ever had multiple placewinners at this tournament and the second time in as many trips. The Bearcats sent seven wrestlers to the podium in their last appearance back in 2024.
"I thought we showed a lot of improvement and fight today," said Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach
Ryan LeBlanc. "It was great to see our younger guys compete and respond to adversity.
Mikey Squires,
Trent Sibble and
Carson Wagner all showed a lot of heart battling back after tough losses."
Highlights
- Squires extended his unbeaten streak to start the season to 7-0 by winning his first two matches Friday. The graduate student shut out Bellarmine's Kennedy Wyatt in an 8-0 major decision before pinning Drexel's Dan Rella. After encountering his first loss of the season in the quarterfinals to Columbia's Jack Wehmeyer 4-1, Squires bounced back with a 15-0 technical fall over George Mason's Jack Kelly in 1:38 and an 8-2 decision over Hofstra's Will Conlon to reach the podium. Squires was granted fifth place following a no contest in the fifth place match against Army West Point's Wolfgang Frable.
- Sibble reached the heavyweight quarterfinals thanks to back-to-back 5-0 shutouts against Princeton's Sebastian Garibaldi and Drexel's Shane Whitney. A 2-0 loss to Army West Point's Lucas Stoddard moved Sibble to the consolation bracket, where Sibble defeated LIU's Chris Powell and Penn's John Vincinguerra 3-1. With the fifth place match against Kent State's Brentan Simmerman, Sibble was awarded a fifth-place finish.
- Wagner's day began with him falling to Franklin & Marshall's Jack Parker 8-4. The junior then recovered by winning his next five matches to reach the fifth place match. Wagner began that stretch by picking up his first technical fall of the season when he defeated Lock Haven's Alex Reed 21-4 in 5:25. After putting up two more decisions against Bellarmine's Damion Ryan 9-4 and George Mason's JB Dragovich 8-3, Wagner went to overtime with Hofstra's Teague Strobel for the second time this week. Once again, Wagner prevailed in sudden victory, this time by a score of 4-1. For his final match of the day, Wagner defeated LIU's Sawyer Ostroff in a 10-1 major decision to reach the fifth place match. Wagner ultimately finished sixth following a no contest against Navy's Nick Treaster.
- Luke Geleta won four matches at 149 lbs., missing the podium by one victory. The freshman started the tournament 3-0 with a pin against Drexel's Justin Soriano and decisions against Franklin & Marshall's Aidan O'Shea (8-2) and Buffalo's Sam Ewing (8-5). Following an 11-2 loss in the quarterfinals to Princeton's Chris Martino, Geleta pinned Pittsburgh's Carson Walsh to set himself up with a match against Virginia's Jayce Paridon with a spot on the podium at stake. Paridon ultimately prevailed 11-0 to end Geleta's day.
