Men’s Soccer defeated 1-0 at Bryant

Own goal in first half proves decisive in AE road match

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – It was an own goal that was the difference in Binghamton's 1-0 loss at Bryant in an America East men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Beirne Stadium.

The Bulldogs (10-2-3, 3-1-1 AE) were credited with a goal after a Bearcat defender inadvertently headed the ball into their own net. The play came off a corner kick in the 21st minute.

Despite conceding the goal, the Bearcats were able to mount a substantial charge during the second half in an attempt to get the equalizer. Binghamton controlled possession for large stretches of time over the final 45 minutes and hit the crossbar in the 87th minute of play.

"We knew today was going to be a tough match," head coach Tommy Moon said. "It's a disappointing result but I am proud of the effort by our guys. They stayed organized the entire match and had a lot of belief in what we were trying to accomplish."

For Binghamton (2-7-5, 1-2-2 AE), the defeat snapped its three-game conference streak with at least one point.

Bryant finished the match with a 19-5 advantage in total shots. Shots on goal, however, favored the Bulldogs by only a 5-2 margin.

The Bearcats travel to Vermont on Friday for a 4 p.m. match.
