Men's Soccer Ties No. 23 Vermont 1-1

Bearcats gain crucial point with one regular-season match left

BURLINGTON, Vt. –  Binghamton (2-7-6, 1-2-3 AE) gained an important point in the conference standings as it tied No. 23 Vermont (9-2-4, 3-1-2 AE) 1-1 in an America East men's soccer match on Friday afternoon at Virtue Field. The deadlock gives the Bearcats six points in the America East standings with one regular-season contest remaining. Binghamton has now gained a point in four of its last five conference games.

Five days after an own goal went against Binghamton, the tables were turned in its favor. With the Catamounts up 1-0 in the 78th minute, senior Marcus Nahim took a long throw-in that went into the box. At that point, the ball inadvertently went off a Catamount defender and into the net.

The Bearcats played Vermont even for the entire 90 minutes. The Catamounts held a slim 16-14 edge in total shots but Binghamton led 6-5 in shots on goal. The Bearcats were particularly sharp in the first half as they outshot Vermont 7-5.

"We played as close to a full 90 minutes as we have all year," head coach Tommy Moon said. "Vermont is a great team and in the first half, we created a lot of good scoring chances. Even after we allowed the goal, we kept fighting."

Vermont's goal, which came in the 73rd minute, was scored by Jack McDowell. Phillip Shmidtke was credited with the assist.

In goal, senior Natan Jemaneh Admassu made four saves.

Binghamton's final regular-season match is at home against UAlbany on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
