Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | David O’Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu)

Women’s Basketball drops season opener at Monmouth 63-40

Boyd nets 15 points, K. Bennett adds 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks

WEST BRANCH, N.Y. – Gigi Gamble scored a game-high 19 points while Divine Dibula finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, powering Monmouth (1-0) to a 63-40 win over Binghamton (0-1) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday evening at the Hackensack Meridian Athletic Center. The game featured a pair of preseason conference favorites to finish first - the Bearcats in the America East and the Hawks in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

Gamble, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, was 8-of-15 from the field, grabbed a pair of rebounds and recorded three steals. Dibula - who joined Gamble as a CAA preseason first-team all-conference selection - was 5-for-10 from the field and drained all seven of her free throw attempts.

For the Bearcats, the defeat overshadowed a near triple-double by senior forward Kendall Bennett. She finished with 10 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. She has now posted 18 career double-doubles and her block total is the highest by a Bearcat since Alyssa James also finished with seven rejections against Army back on Nov. 11, 2017.

Also reaching double figures in scoring was senior guard Yanniah Boyd, who netted a team-best 15 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Monmouth got the separation it needed in the opening period, scoring 10 unanswered points during the final 6:23 to take a 14-4 lead. Gamble and Dibula combined for eight of the Hawks' 14 points over the first 10 minutes of play.

The Bearcats got to within 27-21 on a jumper by Boyd with 8:36 left to go in the third period. Monmouth, however, answered with a 12-2 blitz over the ensuing 4:30 to go up 39-23. Gamble and Dibula combined for six points during that stretch.

In the final period, Monmouth put the game out of reach with a 14-3 run over a span of 4:01 to go up 59-35 with 3:28 remaining.

Sophomore forward Ashley Redd grabbed seven rebounds for the Bearcats while senior guard Bella Pucci registered a game-high four steals.

Binghamton begins the America East-MAAC Challenge on Friday against defending champion Fairfield. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
