Women’s Soccer advances to AE title game

Baker and Holstein score in 2-0 semifinal win over UMBC

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior back Megan Baker and freshman midfielder Lizzie Holstein each scored a goal, powering top-ranked Binghamton (9-3-5) to a 2-0 win over fifth-seeded UMBC (10-6-4) in an America East women's soccer semifinal match on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the conference championship game for the first time since 2022 and will host either Bryant or Maine this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.

Baker's goal came on a penalty kick in the 21st minute. She lifted her attempt into the upper-right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Holstein, meanwhile, got the insurance goal in the 70th minute on a header from close range. The assists were credited to freshman forward Taylor Gabel and senior back Sophia Garofalo. For Holstein, it was her second goal of the season.

On the other side of the field, senior goalkeeper Rebecca Kessler made six saves to record her 11th shutout of the season.

"We knew we were facing a quality opponent today and we talked about playing with a good intensity and work rate," head coach Neel Bhatacharjee said. "I thought we did a good job today with what we wanted to do within our game plan. We are excited to be advancing and we are looking forward to hosting the championship game."

Total shots favored Binghamton by a 16-12 margin. The Bearcats also had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Furthermore, Binghamton posted a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks as well as a 54-46 lead in possession percentage.

"We were super motivated going into the game to get the win," Baker said. "As a senior, I have never been to the finals, so our class and the grad students really got the team up for today."

"The energy was nothing but high in the locker room before the game." Holstein said. "We've had a lot of confidence this year and I think it really showed today."

This marks the third time that Binghamton will be hosting the America East Championship game. The Bearcats defeated Maine 2-0 in 2004 and tied New Hampshire 4-4 in 2022. In the decisive shootout, however, the Wildcats won 3-2 to claim the crown.

In addition, this coming Saturday marks the fifth time in program history that the Bearcats have advanced to the conference finals. They were also the runner up in 2009 and 2020.
