Women's basketball downed by UAlbany

Bearcats fall to 9-3 in America East

ALBANY, N.Y - Binghamton women's basketball (17-8, 9-3) dropped to UAlbany (13-12, 3-9) after being held to their lowest point total of the season, 52-41. Yanniah Boyd provided a team-high 11 points off the bench, while Kendall Bennett had eight offensive rebounds for a total of 12 in Saturday's late-night contest.

"Just like Vermont, Albany is a tough place to play at," head coach Mary Grimes stated. "No one on our team has won there. It's a mental hump we have to get over."

UAlbany shot 50% from the field in the first quarter and got out to a strong 18-5 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Great Danes forced Binghamton's offense into taking highly contested shots throughout the whole first half, while the Great Danes were able to get open looks behind the three-point line, draining six threes to Binghamton's one.

Binghamton started to drive to the basket and get some fouls called, which allowed them to reach the free-throw line and put some of the Great Danes in early foul trouble.

Leah Middleton generated a steal that saw the Bearcats head the other way to allow for Bella Pucci to score at the buzzer to end the first half at 33-14.

Binghamton came out of the half with a surge of urgency and began to dig into UAlbany's lead with a 9-0 run with 6:21 left to play in third period.

UAlbany was able to extend its lead again by getting to the free-throw line 10 times in the third quarter, converting on nine of its attempts. Ultimately, getting their lead back up to 18 points with one quarter left to play.

The Bearcats defense came out in the fourth quarter to hold UAlbany to just one field goal and eight points in the final 10 minutes of play.

Binghamton started to make its way back into the game, hoping for another Bearcat comeback, but could not generate the points to complete what would've been their largest comeback of the season.

"At this point, we just need to keep taking it one game at a time and learn from it," coach Grimes said, as the team looks ahead to their final four games.

Binghamton will look to bounce back into the win column when they host Bryant (17-9, 7-6 AE) on Thursday.
