Baseball drops DH at William & Mary, 10-5 and 5-4

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Binghamton baseball (1-5) dropped a doubleheader at William & Mary (2-4) Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park, falling 10-5 and 5-4.

The Bearcats had just four hits in the nightcap but rallied from a 4-0 hole to tie it 4-4 before the Tribe plated the winning run in the seventh. Binghamton put the tying run on second in each of the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't cash in. In the ninth, the Bearcats put runners on first and second before a double play ended the game.

Senior second baseman Zack Kent drove in two of the four runs. Redshirt junior pitcher Ryan Bates continued his comeback from injury with 2.0 scoreless relief innings. Bates struck out three.

Down 4-0, Binghamton scored twice in the fifth, thanks to five walks. Two innings later, the Bearcats sent eight to the plate and tied it with a Kent RBI single and a bases-loaded walk by junior DH Zach Anderson. But Binghamton left the bases loaded – three of 10 left stranded in the game.

In the opener, W&M scored runs in six of eight innings, including each of the final four frames. Binghamton collected 10 hits but lacked a timely delivery and stranded 13 on the bases. Binghamton led 2-1 after scoring single runs in the second and third innings. But the Tribe pulled ahead for good with two in the bottom of the third.

Anderson went 3-for-5, senior shortstop Mike Stellrecht went 2-for-4 with three RBI and sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton collected two hits.

The Bearcats head to North Carolina next weekend for a three-game set at High Point.
