Baseball powers past St. Bona 15-9 in home opener

Bearcats jump ahead 8-1, belt two home runs to post third win in last four games

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (5-8) tallied 15 runs on 16 hits to power past visiting St. Bonaventure (4-11) 15-9 Tuesday afternoon at the Complex. After 12 straight games on the road, the Bearcats were treated to 70 degree temperatures and a crowd off 300+ for their home opener. The win was Bing's third in the last four games.

Binghamton bunched their scoring into three big innings with four runs in each of the second and fourth innings and five runs in the sixth. Ahead 8-1 after four frames, the Bearcats saw the Bonnies score six straight to pull within one, 8-7. But in the bottom of the sixth, the home squad plated five runs on four hits to pull away for good.

The game stretched well beyond the three-hour mark and featured 27 hits, 24 runs and 15 pitchers used.

Sophomore first baseman Steven Kraus, newly minted as America East Player of the Week earlier in the day, went 4-for-6 with an RBI. Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton had two hits and four RBI and sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter had two hits, including a 3-run home run - his team-high fourth of the season. Junior catcher Zach Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double, solo home run and two RBI.

Kraus led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to extend his hit streak to eight games. Two batters later, Hunter took a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field for a 3-run shot. The Bearcats sent nine to the plate in the inning and added another run on an RBI single by freshman DH Caden Albright

After Bona got one run back in the fourth, Binghamton erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Bolton had a 2-run single and the Bearcats took advantage of two walks, an error and wild pitch.

The sixth inning was an extended one as both teams scored five runs. Having clawed back to 8-7 down, St. Bonaventure threatened to take the lead with the bases loaded shot on the left side of the infield. But sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig dove, coraled the grounder and threw out the runner to strand three. Anderson then led off the bottom of the inning with a deep blast to left on a 1-0 pitch. Later in the inning, Bolton added another 2-run single and Kraus brought in another run with an RBI hit.

Sophomore Aiden Milburn was the ninth and final Bearcat pitcher and he struck out five in 2.0 scoreless, 1-hit innings.

Binghamton is scheduled to host Bryant in the conference-opening series this weekend, though the host site may change with frigid temperatures expected in the area.
