Softball defeated 13-3 at Princeton

Tigers take weekend series two games to one

PRINCETON, N.J. - Host Princeton (9-8) reeled off nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, sparking its 13-3 win over Binghamton (5-16) in a non-conference softball game on Sunday afternoon at Cynthia Paul Lynn '94 Field. With the victory, the Tigers take the three-game weekend series from the Bearcats after the two teams split Saturday's doubleheader.

After scoring two runs in both the second and third innings on Sunday, Princeton sent 13 batters to the plate in the decisive fourth inning. Although they only had seven hits during the frame, the Tigers drew three walks - including two with the bases loaded.

The Bearcats scored all of their runs in the top of the fifth inning but were unable to extend the game. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey doubled home the first run and scored one batter later on a two-run home run by graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough.

Carey finished the game with three doubles, which tied the Binghamton program's single-game record. Christina Quijano set the mark in 2004 and Sara Herskowitz previously tied it in 2019.

Also reaching a milestone on Sunday was senior catcher Emma Lawson. Her single in the top of the fourth inning was the 100th hit of her career. She is now the 26th player in Binghamton program history to reach the mark.

Reece Uehara improved to 3-1 with the victory while junior pitcher Delaney Glover fell to 1-4 with the loss.

Carey was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate on Sunday while redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec finished 2-for-2.

For the weekend, Carey was 5-for-10 (.500) with four doubles and a pair of RBI. Kopec hit .333 (2-for-6) during the series as did Lawson (also 2-for-6) and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig (3-for-9). McDonough was 3-for-10 (.300) with her two-run home run.

Binghamton returns home to face UMBC this coming weekend in its opening America East series of the season.
