Women's lacrosse downed in OT against reigning AE champs UAlbany

Bearcats drop to 1-2 in conference play in tight battle with Great Danes

ALBANY, N.Y. – Binghamton women's lacrosse (4-7, 1-2 AE) fell in the final seconds of overtime to defending America East champions, UAlbany (8-3, 3-0) 12-11 on Saturday afternoon.

Emma Blloshmi recorded her 18th career hat trick on a five-point performance with three goals and two assists. Maeve Sayre had multiple clutch saves for the Bearcats, finishing with a season-high 11 on the day.

"Today was not the outcome we wanted, but it was the battle we expected, and the fight from our players we were hoping to see," said Binghamton Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Stephanie Allen. "This group really stepped up today; showing what they are capable of. We stayed disciplined and connected - allowing us to stick to our game plan on both sides of the field. We will be carrying a lot of good from this game into the weeks ahead."

UAlbany opened the scoring just 38 seconds into Saturday's match. Binghamton would go on to score four unanswered goals with the help from Sabrina Boyle, Blloshmi, and Mia Forte. The Bearcats led 4-1 after the opening 15 minutes of play.

A defensive battle highlighted the second quarter, as each side only connected with the back of the net once. Leah Kaufer scored her fourth goal of the year for Binghamton which kept the Bearcats' lead to three.
The Great Danes earned a free position attempt with under a minute left to play at the half. Maeve Sayre denied the Great Danes with a highlight reel split save, keeping the Bearcats ahead 5-2 at the half.

The third quarter was the opposite of the second quarter, as an offensive surge took over with a total of nine goals being scored, the most in the any quarter of the day. Christina Lauro opened the second half scoring at 13:09 to give Binghamton a 6-2 lead.

UAlbany soon scored two goals to cut the deficit to two, but Blloshmi would score her 30th goal of the season on a free position attempt to extend the lead back to three.

The Great Danes would go on to score four unanswered goals, giving them their first lead of the game since the 10 minutes mark in the first quarter, 8-7 with 2:24 left to play in the third quarter.

Coming off a four-goal game last week, Carla Curth found her first goal of the game on a woman-up opportunity with 1:08 left in the third quarter. Curth would go on to score early in the fourth quarter, giving Binghamton back the lead 9-8.

The two sides traded a few goals, leaving the score tied at 10-10 before Jess Robinson connected with Mia Forte to give the Bearcats a one goal lead with 3:51 left to play. The Great Danes responded quickly with the sixth tying goal of the day to make it even once again at 11. Ultimately sending the game to overtime.

UAlbany won the draw control and drove down to end the game but was denied on a great save by Sayre with 4:14 in the extra period. Binghamton did make a successful clear attempt but soon turned the ball over and allowed for UAlbany to gain possession and call a timeout moments later.

Coming out of the timeout, UAlbany had their play and looked to end the game, but once again Sayre came up with another huge save to keep Binghamton's hopes alive. However, the Bearcats could force a turnover behind their own net, allowing for UAlbany to find the ground ball and dish it to an open Paisley Cook, who scored the game-winning goal for UAlbany.

Binghamton returns home for their next AE contest against UMass Lowell on Saturday, Apr. 4 at noon for Youth and Military Appreciation Day at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
