Surging baseball completes sweep over UMBC 16-5

First-place Bearcats have won seven in row, 11 of 13, improve to 9-3 in America East

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (17-13, 9-3 America East) snapped a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and scored 15 runs over the final four frames to steamroll visiting UMBC (16-14, 5-4 AE) 16-5 Sunday afternoon at the Bearacts Baseball Complex. The game was halted with two outs in the eighth inning after the Bearcats reached the 10-run rule.

With the win, Binghamton swept the weekend series and extended the team's win streak to seven games - longest in nine years. The Bearcats have now won 11 of their last 13 games to surge into first place in the conference standings at the halfway point of the slate.

After seeing a 4-0 lead disappear in the sixth inning, the Bearcats snapped a 5-5 tie with four runs in the seventh inning. Binghamton then finished off the flurry with seven runs on five hits in the eighth - the final game-halting blow coming on a two-run home run by freshman first baseman Caden Albright - his first career long ball.

Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI. Sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig went 3-for-5 with three RBI and senior left fielder Zack Kent and sophomore right fielder Braylen Gonzalez each contributed two hits and two RBI.

Long before the offense shifted into high gear, junior starter Jackson Mitchell delivered 5.0 scoreless innings in his best outing of the season. Mitchell allowed just three hits - all singles - and struck out a career-high seven. He departed with a 4-0 lead and didn't get a decision, but lowered his season ERA to 1.98.

"We are all just playing for each other right now," Bolton said. "If you know you have the guy behind you ... you feel unstoppable. It's a good group of guys ... and when we get a roll going, we don't stop."

Binghamton plays a non-conference game at Cornell Tuesday afternoon.
