Allen Breaks Softball All-Time Home Run Record

Bearcats edged in 10-6, 17-14 slugfests at Cornell

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior catcher Elisa Allen broke the Binghamton softball program's all-time record with her 45th career home run during the Bearcats' non-conference doubleheader at Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at the Niemand-Robison Softball Field. In a pair of games that featured plenty of offensive fireworks, however, the Big Red (20-20) swept Binghamton (13-24) 10-6 and 17-14.

Allen entered the day tied with Jessica Phillips (2010-13), who hit 44 home runs during her career. In the top of the sixth inning of the first game, she drilled a solo home run over the left field fence to move into sole possession of first place all time. Allen ended the day 2-for-6 (.333) with a home run and three RBI.

For the season, Allen continues to lead the America East with 15 home runs and 42 RBI.

In the nightcap, it was sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey that was the Bearcats' star at the plate. She went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and six RBI. Carey also finished the second game with 11 total bases - just one off Lisa Cadogan's 2015 school record of 12. For the day, Carey was 4-for-8 (.500).

Carey - who came into the game ranked eighth in the nation in batting - is now hitting .488 this season. In addition, she has nine home runs, 32 RBI and 16 doubles.

Freshman designated player Lauren Payne, meanwhile, batted a team-best .714 for the day, going 5-for-7 at the plate. Senior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach was 4-for-7 (.571) with three RBI.

The first game featured two ties and a pair of lead changes. Redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec put the Bearcats up 2-1 with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. Down 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Binghamton came up with three runs to deadlock the game. Allen drew a bases-loaded walk during that frame.

The turning point, however, came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Charlize Cai hit a two-out grand slam, giving Cornell a 9-5 lead. Allen responded with her solo shot in the top of the sixth inning but the Big Red got that run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Mila Fiordalisi raised her record to 9-6 with the win while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy fell to 3-7 with the defeat. Six of the runs Kennedy allowed, however, were unearned as the Bearcats committed four errors in the opener.

Payne went a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game.

Carey led off the nightcap with a home run but the Big Red blew the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Carey doubled home another run in the top of the second inning but the Bearcats still trailed 9-2 at that point.

In the fourth inning, Binghamton turned the game around completely with nine runs to take an 11-9 lead.. Carey started off the scoring with a three-run home run and capped the scoring with an infield single. In between her two at-bats, Minnichbach hit a two-run double, Payne delivered an RBI single and senior first baseman Emma Lawson singled home two more runs.

In the top of the sixth inning, Binghamton found themselves down 12-11 but took the lead back with three more runs. Minnichbach scored on a fielding error, Allen doubled home a run and graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough delivered an RBI single.

The Big Red finally got the separation they needed with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Emma Harshberger improved to 5-2 while the loss was tagged to sophomore pitcher Savanna McHale, whose record dropped to 6-3.

Binghamton returns to action at home against UMass Lowell May 1-2 on Senior Day Weekend at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
