VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Longwood (26-18) scored the game's final nine runs to overtake Binghamton baseball (22-16) 9-7 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex.
After recording an 11-game win streak that lifted the team to the top of the America East standings, the Bearcats have dropped three of four non-conference games.
On Sunday, Binghamton led 7-0 before the Lancers scored four runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and the final three tallies in the ninth to steal the win. The Bearcats left 12 runners stranded and were kept off the board over the final five innings.
Sophomore center fielder
Matt Bolton hit a 3-run run home run in the fourth inning - his fifth long ball of the season. That opposite-field blast gave the Bearcats a 7-0 lead.
But Longwood countered with four on four hits in the fifth. The Lancers used three walks and a hit batter to score twice in the seventh and cut their deficit to one, 7-6. Then in the ninth, Longwood scored three runs on five hits after a leadoff walk.
Sophomore catcher
Tommy Popoff continued his hot hitting with two hits. Popoff drove in the game's first run with a 2-out RBI single in the first inning and he also drew two walks. He hit .583 (7-for-12) for the week and has RBIs in each of his last eight games. Popoff is hitting .358 over his last 25 games.
Sophomore right fielder
Braylen Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Binghamton finishes its stretch of five straight non-conference games Tuesday at Le Moyne.
