Softball beats UAlbany 9-3 in AE series opener

Allen homers twice, Carey and Dodig drive in two runs each

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior catcher Elisa Allen smacked a pair of home runs while sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig each posted a pair of RBI, powering Binghamton (8-17, 6-0 AE) to a 9-3 win over UAlbany (14-12, 3-4 AE) in an America East softball game on Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats take the opener of the three-game conference series, which concludes with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

Allen, who also drove in a game-high three runs, recorded the eighth two-home run game of her career. She now has 39 home runs for her career as well as 102 RBI. Against the Great Danes, Allen became the ninth player in program history to reach the 100-RBI mark. For the season, she has a conference-best nine home runs and has 23 RBI.

Carey went 2-for-3 to raise her batting average to a team-high and career-best .512. Dodig, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 and also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to a team-best eight games. Her batting average this season is now .407.

Binghamton pounded out 12 hits against UAlbany on Friday and hit .428 as a team.

"I'm really proud of our girls," head coach Jess Bump said. "We put together a full game - both on offense and defense. We have been talking about how we have to score runs every inning and win every inning and we either tied or won every inning today. We are really locking in and it's paying off."

Allen opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a titanic two-run home run over the left field fence. Senior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach made it 3-0 when she led off the bottom of the third inning with her first home run of the season. Three batters later, Dodig made it 4-0 on a RBI single.

Sara Anderson trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning. Carey, however, answered right back with a two-run single in the bottom of the same inning.

Mary Kate Murray led off the top of the fifth inning with a home run, pulling UAlbany to within 6-3. Allen then matched her with a solo home run in the bottom of the same inning.

The Bearcats then got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. McDonough doubled home the first run and Dodig followed with her sacrifice fly.

Savanna McHale went the first five innings to raise her record to 4-1. Taking the loss was Hailey Errichiello, who is now 5-7.
