VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton's Division of Athletics continued its tradition of thanking its 400+ student-athletes with a special National Student-Athlete Day celebration on Tuesday. Members of the athletics administration set up a familiar "pop-up" station on the Events Center Concourse and for this installment, pizza was served during the busy lunch hours.
Tuesday's event was after the official National Student-Athlete Day, which is April 6 (Monday). That date fell over Spring/Passover/Easter break, so the Bearcats celebrated on Tuesday. This holiday was created in 1987 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. It celebrates high school and college student-athletes annually and promotes the positive virtues of sport, student-athletes as a whole, and the positive effect they both have on society.
The pizza "pop-up" station was the sixth of the year, with previous surprise snacks including popcorn, pasta, nachos, cider and donuts, and ice cream.
