Men’s Soccer plays to 0-0 tie against Colgate

Bearcats record second shutout of the season

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (0-2-2) played to a scoreless draw against Colgate (1-3-1) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It marked the second time in four games this season that the Bearcats have not yielded a goal.

Senior goalkeeper Natan Jemaneh Admassu recorded four saves and the Binghamton back line of freshman Jona Meiner, junior Khayr Ogunsanya, senior Saar Almoznino and graduate student Will Mahoney held the Raiders to just a single shot on goal in the second half.

"Tonight was a very good game for the guys," interim head coach Tommy Moon said. "Against Lafayette last week, we were very good in the game but had some mental lapses. So we wanted to make sure we put together two good halves tonight and I thought we did that."

Admassu's two biggest saves of the night both came during the 11th minute. From close range, he made back-to-back saves. He dove to deflect the first Colgate shot and then kicked away the second one. The other two saves Admassu recorded later in the match, however, were not as threatening.

"Our defense was very good today," Admassu said. "It was a team effort even though the clean sheet obviously goes on my record. This is the second out of four games that we've gotten (the shutout) so I am very proud of everybody."

The Raiders controlled play for most of the first half, out shooting the Bearcats 5-2. In the second half, however, shots were even at 8-8. Binghamton had a handful of scoring chances during the final 45 minutes but Christian Kellogg made a pair of saves (and three for the game) as Colgate posted its second shutout of the year.

"We are getting some really good looks on goal," Moon said. "We just have to continue to create scoring chances but I am not concerned about goals. The goals will come."

Colgate held the edge in both total shots (13-10) and shots on goal (4-3). The Raiders also held a 55-45 advantage in possession percentage. Corner kicks also favored Colgate 6-1 but the Bearcats held them without a shot on goal each time.

"Saar is always telling our defense that we can never concede a goal off a corner kick," Admassu said. "We won many balls off of those corners tonight and it was a real collective effort on those plays."

Binghamton continues its three-game home stand on Saturday against Central Connecticut at 6:07 p.m.
