Visions Center Academic Services & Tutoring

Academic Services

Academic Advising: Each team has an Athletic Academic Advisor who will advise student-athletes during course registration and monitor their progress toward degree.

One-On-One Tutoring: Provides student-athletes with individual instruction to develop academic skills and strategies essential to the successful navigation of course content.

Advanced Registration: Student athletes are allowed advance registration of classes each semester to avoid conflicts with class and practice/competition schedules. Athletes registration ticket time has an additional 24 credits to help secure registration desired classes.

Study Hall: All student athletes are encouraged to utilize the Visions Center for Student Athlete Excellence to study for class.

Missed Class Letters: At the beginning of each semester, student-athletes will get a missed class letter from their Athletic Academic Advisor to hand to each of their professors to sign and return to their advisor. The missed class letter will include dates to which the student-athlete might be missing class for an athletic competition.

Tutoring

Facilitates the delivery of individual support in which the development of academic skills, self-confidence, self-advocacy, self-awareness, and problem solving abilities are encouraged and celebrated. Provides student-athletes with guidance in the application of previously acquired academic skills to meet Division I Intercollegiate Athletics.

Tutoring Rules

  • Cancellation/No Show Policy

Cancellation policy

  • If a student-athlete has not shown up to a meeting and if the tutor has not heard from the student after 0 minutes, then the tutor should report the outcome on starfish.
  • If a student-athlete cancels within 2 hours of the scheduled appointment, this is considered a no-show. The tutor will be paid for the appointment if the student-athlete canceled within this 2 hour time frame.
  • The tutor will then go to the student-athletes' Starfish profile, and mark the "No-Show/Cancellation" flag. This will prompt an immediate email to the tutorial coordinators.

"No-Show" Policy
A "no-show" is defined as a student-athlete who did not attend a scheduled tutoring session and who did not provide prior notice. A "no-show" is also defined as a student-athlete who has canceled a tutoring appointment less than two hours prior to the meeting taking place. Student-athletes who have been reported as a "no-show" for the first time will be expected to meet with their academic advisor and tutorial coordinator to review the matter, including a review of the "no-show" policy. Additionally, the head coach will be informed of the first violation. Consequently, following the first "no-show", if a student-athlete is a "no-show" for a second time, the student-athlete will no longer have athletics tutoring privileges in the VISIONS Center for the remainder of the semester. Student-athletes in this situation will retain access to other academic support services on campus, such as meeting with their athletics academic advisor, University Tutoring Services, professor office hours, supplemental instruction, as well as all other campus provided services.

How to request a tutor

CRLA
All athletics tutors will work towards becoming certified by the College Reading Learning Association (CRLA). To become CRLA certified tutors must receive 7 hours in-person training, 4-hours online modules training, and must have tutored for 25+ hours. In collaboration with the University Tutorial Services, this mandatory training is offered during the first few weeks of each semester depending on the number of new hires.

Mentoring
The VISIONS Center for Student-Athlete Excellence Mentoring program matches student-athletes with BU students who have demonstrated success in their overall academic experience, and can provide support in adjusting to the daily life of a student-athlete at Binghamton University.

Mentors are available to assist student-athletes with:

  • Improve overall academic skills (time management, organizational techniques, study skills)
  • Connection with campus resources
  • Assist with transition to the rigor of higher education
  • Goal setting
  • Problem solving skills
  • Communication with professors
  • Classroom etiquette

Mentors fill out weekly assignment trackers and notes to assist the student-athlete in learning and achieving positive academic behaviors. Our mentors work closely with each student-athletes advisor to ensure they are staying on track and are appropriately providing support.
