Chris Downey began his tenure at Binghamton on August 3, 2015 as the Director of Sports Medicine and Athletics Healthcare Administrator. He was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine and Performance in July 2020.
Downey lead the sports medicine unit for BU's 21-sport athletics program and also oversee the department's strength and conditioning area as well as mental health and nutrition initiatives within the athletics department.
"Chris has been an outstanding leader in the medical care for our 400+ student-athletes," Elliott said at the time of his promotion. "We are expanding his role to encompass a comprehensive oversight of all aspects of student-athlete well-being and performance training. His expertise will be very important as we move forward."
Downey oversees a staff of 10 sports medicine members and more than a dozen student interns. In his expanded role, he also will oversee the department's three full-time sport performance coaches.
A certified and licensed Athletic Trainer and member of many local, regional, and national organizations Downey has held numerous leadership roles during his Binghamton tenure. He is the chair of the America East Conference Health & Safety Committee, an active member of the Student-Athlete of Concern Committee, Student of Concern Committee, and Student-Athlete Mental Health & Well-Being Committee.
He has been an active member of Elliott's senior staff and has provided key research and planning for the department's initiatives moving forward from the coronavirus pandemic. Â
A native of Binghamton, Downey graduated from Alfred University with a bachelor's degree in athletic training in 2009. He earned his master's degree in exercise physiology from Midwestern State University in 2011.
Chris resides in Vestal with his wife Megan and three daughters, Reagan, Harper and Emersyn.
