An accomplished coach at the NCAA Division I level, Bethann Shapiro Ord enters her sixth season as the head coach at Binghamton University in 2023-24. She has 13 years of NCAA Division I head coaching experience, having led Weber State from 2011-18.

In each of her five seasons at Binghamton, Shapiro Ord has been able to maximize the Bearcats’ potential. During that stretch, the Bearcats have posted one America East Player of the Year, six all-conference selections, six all-defensive picks, four all-rookie choices and a pair of all-academic honorees.

Three Binghamton players have reached the 1,000-point mark under Shapiro Ord’s watch. They include Rebecca Carmody, Kai Moon and Denai Bowman. Bowman is a three-time all-conference seletion and three-time America East All-Defensive honoree heading into the 2023-24 season.

Binghamton has appeared in the NCAA statistical rankings several times under Shapiro Ord’s guidance. Moon ranked No. 18 in scoring during the 2019-20 season (19.6 ppg.) and the Bearcats ranked No. 20 in free throw percentage that year. During the 2022-23 season, the Bearcats led the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense.
Shapiro Ord steered the Bearcats to a 22-9 record during the 2019-20 campaign. Binghamton started off the season 9-0 and went on to record their most wins in 21 years. Kai Moon was named the America East Player of the Year and the Binghamton offense reeled off 66.6 points per game. In the classroom, every player on the Bearcats' roster was named to the America East Spring 2020 Academic Honor Roll.
In her first season at Binghamton (2018-19), Shapiro Ord coached a pair of America East All-Conference selections (Moon and Rebecca Carmody) as well as one All-Rookie honoree. In the classroom, the women's basketball program attained an overall GPA of 3.36 for the 2018-19 academic year.
Shapiro Ord came to Binghamton from Weber State, where she was the head coach from 2011-18. While at Weber State, she rebuilt the Wildcat program and steered it to a pair of seasons with at least 20 wins as well as two national postseason appearances.
Under Shapiro Ord’s watch, the Wildcats went 57-41 in her final three years, advanced to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) twice and attained the highest win total in program history (23 in 2015-16). Weber State finished this past season with a RPI of 150 out of 346 Division I programs. In the three years prior to Shapiro Ord’s arrival in 2011, Weber State did not win more than 10 games.
Shapiro Ord helped the Wildcats earn several top 20 national rankings in 2015-16. The Wildcats were ranked No. 17 in the country in steals per game averaging 10.5 a game and No. 9 in total steals with 366 on the season. WSU also ranked No. 20 that year in three point field goals made with 267 which is the most three pointers made in a single season in school history.
Prior to arriving at Weber State, Shapiro Ord was an assistant coach for 22 years with several successful Division I women’s basketball programs in major conferences.
From 2007-11, Shapiro Ord was an assistant coach at Louisville. During that time, the Cardinals advanced to the Sweet 16 three times as well as the 2009 national title game. Shapiro Ord was instrumental in the Cardinals signing three Top 15 recruiting classes and one in the top five. She also helped bring two high school All-Americans to Louisville.
Before her years at Louisville, Shapiro Ord was an assistant coach at Colorado from 2005-07 and at Tulsa from 1999-05. The Golden Hurricanes reached the WNIT in both 2004 and 2005.

Shapiro Ord’s assistant coaching career also includes stops at Dayton (1997-98), Auburn (1996-97) and Pittsburgh (1992-96). Auburn won the 2007 SEC championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, advanced to the third round of the 1994 WNIT.
A 1989 graduate of UMBC, Shapiro Ord began her coaching career as an assistant at Nazareth during the 1989-90 campaign. She then spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Wagner (1990-92).
Throughout her coaching career, Shapiro Ord’s recruiting efforts have paid dividends. At Weber State, she landed six All-Big Sky selections including one Newcomer of the Year and one Defensive Player of the Year. As an assistant coach, she has recruited five WNBA draft picks including Angel McCoughtry, the 2009 top overall selection. In addition, Shapiro Ord has helped three different programs sign a total of seven recruiting classes that ranked among the top 40 nationally – including three in the top 15.
During her undergraduate career at UMBC, Shapiro Ord was a three-year starting point guard for the Retrievers. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and went on to earn her master’s degree in elementary education from Wagner in 1992.
Originally from Rochester, New York, she married Jim Ord in August 2003.
