John Hartrick, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., is in his 35th year overseeing the University’s athletics communications arm in 2025-26. He is the longest-tenured member of the athletics department.
John supervises a full-time staff of five individuals and dozens of student employees in the communications and broadcast areas. He also has developed a robust student-intern program that provides training ground for undergraduate and graduate students at Binghamton and several other colleges in Upstate New York.
He serves as the primary contact for men’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer and men's tennis and is the point-of-contact for the athletics department and specific inquiries for Director of Athletics Eugene Marshall, Jr. Additionally, he is the sport supervisor for women's tennis and golf. John also oversees the department's broadcast arm that features live streaming of 100+ events on ESPN platforms and America East TV, along with radio coverage of men's and women's basketball.
A former college soccer player at SUNY Cortland, Hartrick came to Binghamton 1991 and has been instrumental during the growth of the athletics department from NCAA Division III to its current Division I status. Since 2007, he has served as an associate director of athletics and sits among the senior leadership group of the department. He was promoted to senior associate AD in 2023.
In addition to overseeing the communications efforts of Binghamton’s 21 teams, Hartrick is the chair of the Athletics Hall of Fame, a position he has held since the Hall’s inception in 1996, and has held a leadership role in the annual Awards Banquet, among other special events. He has served on dozens of committees in the department and across campus, including the group that selected the “Bearcats” nickname and logo in 1999, and numerous coaching and staff search committees.
He was awarded permanent appointment in 1998. In 2021, Hartrick was honored with the Eastern Athletic Communications Association's (EAST-COMM) College Division Irving T. Marsh Award Service Bureau Award, for career excellence and contributions to the field of sports information.
Hartrick received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cortland in 1988 and earned his master’s degree in education from East Stroudsburg in 1991.
He and his wife, Jeanette, reside in Johnson City, N.Y. and have six children.
