VESTAL, N.Y. -- Junior forward Kaitlin Martin tallied a goal and an assist to lift Binghamton women's soccer to a 3-0 win at UMBC Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park.

But unfortunately for the Bearcats (7-8-1, 1-5-1 AE), the team's hopes for a spot in the America East playoffs were dashed before the opening whistle. Needing to overtake two teams to reach a top-6 position, BU did its part on Thursday night but earlier in the day, Vermont posted an upset win and Albany gained a tie to secure the final two spots.

Facing a Retrievers team (1-10-5, 0-4-3 AE) it has never lost to (9-0-2), Binghamton struck for three goals to take the steam out of a UMBC team celebrating its Senior Night at home.

"The team really came out hungry and ready on both sides of the ball tonight," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "We wanted to be dynamic and decisive going to goal and also wanted a shutout so it was a great team effort. We scored three beautiful goals that came from team build-up and great finishes. It feels good to win especially on the road and especially since we fell a little short in previous games. Our players did a great job executing today and now we head to Vermont and look to continue to perform well this weekend."

Senior midfielder Emily Pape opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 12th minute. Pape collected a clearing pass and drilled a shot just inside the right post from 25 yards out. In the 23rd minute, Martin took a through ball from senior striker Sarah Furminger and used her speed to break in alone and finish for her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Raber completed the scoring in the 75th minute. Raber took a pass from Martin and found the netting from 18 yards on the right for her first collegiate goal.

Junior keepers Carrie Martin (four saves) and Stephanie Speirs (three saves) each played a half to share the team's sixth shutout of the season.

Binghamton held a 14-10 shots advantage.

The Bearcats conclude their season Sunday at Vermont. A win would allow BU to reach the .500 mark.
