Softball Defeats UMBC 5-0, Finishes Off Weekend Sweep

BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior pitcher Demi Laney fired a four-hit shutout and freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee drilled a two-run home run, leading Binghamton (15-11, 5-1 AE) to a 5-0 win at UMBC (8-28, 1-8 AE) in the finale of a three-game America East softball series on Sunday at the UMBC Softball Field. With the victory, the Bearcats finish off the weekend sweep of the Retrievers.

Laney struck out eight batters in recording her fourth shutout of the season. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning and retired the final five batters of the game.

Chaffee, meanwhile, delivered her blow during a four-run top of the sixth inning. The Bearcats took a quick 1-0 lead on a RBI single by freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan in the top of the first inning but were held scoreless over the next four innings.

Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips made it 2-0 with a RBI double in the sixth inning. She scored one batter later on Chaffee's home run. During Chaffee's at bat, junior pinch runner Colleen Dougherty scored on a wild pitch.

"I thought Demi pitched a good game today," head coach Michelle Burrell said. "We were having a difficult time pushing runs across early on in the game but stayed focused and finished the weekend well."

Laney is now 5-5 on the season while Heather Brown fell to 5-12 with the loss.

Cadogan finished the game 3-for-4 while Chaffee and junior third baseman Lisa Cutrona each collected a pair of hits.

The Bearcats hit .318 during the weekend and held the Retrievers to a .184 batting average. Chaffee finished the series with a team-best five RBI.

Binghamton heads to St. Bonaventure for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
