VESTAL, N.Y. - Despite owning a commanding 32-2 advantage in shots, Binghamton women's soccer (5-8-2, 1-2-2 AE) was saddled with a 0-0 double overtime draw against visiting Albany (5-7-4, 2-1-2 AE) Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The 32 shots were a Division I program high for BU, which did everything but score against their longtime SUNY rival. Each team received one point in the America East standings.
"We were relentless and deserved three points but we'll settle for one," head coach
Sarah McClellan said. "We got the shutout and did a great job for 110 minutes. Our players hustled every play and the entire team was focused on the task at hand. I'm proud of the way we played tonight. I think we did everything in our control. The goals will even out ... we just have to keep shooting and believing. That same work rate will make us a tough team to play each and every game."
The Bearcats produced their first good chance in the eighth minute when junior forward
Katherine Corcoran sent a 12-yard shot just wide of the far post. It was the first of a repeated "wide right" scenario for Binghamton, which saw no less than six shots just miss their mark to the right. Cocoran unloaded a team-high 10 shots and sophomore midfielder
Katie O'Neill recorded nine.
The Great Danes entered the contest with two league wins and were averaging two goals per game but mounted little offense on this night. Albany did have the best chance in the overtime periods, however. With 7:10 remaining in the first extra period, they sophomore back Bianca Webb burst through the middle and BU freshman keeper
Katie Hatziyianis was forced to make a point-blank save.
Binghamton's best chance was on a free kick with 19:05 left in the second half. Senior back
Connie Gormley sent the 35-yard cross from the right side to the far post, where O'Neill's volley from eight yards just went over the crossbar. Eleven minutes earlier, Cocoran did some nice work on the right endline before cutting toward the middle and unleashing a shot that sailed over the bar.
In the first half, freshman forward
Jocelyn Acor had an opportunity when she dribbled about 20 yards into the box on the left and sent a shot to the near post that was blocked by Albany keeper Alana Brennan (11 saves).
Senior keeper
Gaby Gold extended her scoreless string to 225 minutes with a clean first half. Hatziyianis went the second half and overtimes to finish out the pair's fifth shared shutout of the season. Each keeper was called on to make just one save.
With the point, Binghamton moved into a tie with New Hampshire for sixth position in the standings, with the two teams set to square off Sunday afternoon in Vestal during Homecoming Weekend. It will be the team's final home game of the season and its four seniors (
Gaby Gold,
Alyssa Gutierrez,
Connie Gormley,
Emily Nuss) will be honored before the game. Then at halftime, members of the 2004 championship team will be recognized as the program celebrates the 10-year anniversary of that team, which captured the America East regular season and postseason titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
NOTES
It was Binghamton's second straight double overtime game and third in the last five games… The Bearcats are 9-3-2 all-time against Albany ... Last season BU put 29 shots at goal in the team's 2-0 win at Albany.
