VESTAL, N.Y. – Brad Cole scored on a penalty kick with 1:26 left in the second sudden-death overtime period, lifting Vermont (7-5-1, 2-1-1 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (4-9-0, 2-1-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night before a Homecoming crowd of 1,604 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss snapped the Bearcats' two-game winning streak.
With time winding down in the second overtime period, the Bearcats were called for a hand ball inside the box, which set up the Catamounts penalty kick. Cole slid the attempt into the net for his second goal of the year.
Heading into the second overtime period, the shots were even at 11-11. In the opening six minutes, the Bearcats fired four shots and took four corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net. The Catamounts then brought the ball down the field with just over three minutes left to go and eventually were able to convert the penalty kick.
"It is a tough result because I thought our guys played great tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We created quite a few chances but weren't able to finish them off."
