Volleyball Cruises To Sweep At UMass Lowell

Bearcats improve to 6-0 all-time against the River Hawks

Box Score

LOWELL, Mass. – The Binghamton volleyball team bounced back from a tough five-set loss at New Hampshire on Friday with a straight-set victory over UMass Lowell, Sunday afternoon in America East action from the Costello Athletic Center. The Bearcats (4-15, 2-1 AE) utilized a season-best. 304 attack percentage to keep its perfect record (6-0) against the River Hawks (2-18, 0-3).

"I thought we did a good job of controlling the ball," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "Our offense was fluid and efficient, which kept their defense off-balanced. Amanda (Dettmann) did a very nice job of running our offense and getting our middles going. It was a good response from the team and we are looking forward to playing a few home games this weekend."

Sophomore Allison Hovie led the Bearcats with a match-high 13 kills. Senior setter Amanda Dettmann handed out 34 assists while adding 9 digs. Sophomore libero Bailey Walker recorded a match-high 21 digs after breaking the Binghamton single-match record on Friday night with 35. Senior Kristin Hovie and freshman Alexis LaGoy chipped in nine kills each.

Binghamton controlled the match throughout easing to a 1-0 advantage after winning the opening set 25-17. The Bearcats connected on 17 kills in the frame while holding the River Hawks to a .062 hitting clip. Sophomore middle Bianca Anderson led a balanced offense with three kills while three other Bearcats each added two.

The Rivers Hawks battled the Bearcats early in the second set, but a 6-1 Binghamton run opened a 16-8 advantage. BU never looked back cruising to a 25-14 win in the stanza. Allison Hovie sparked the Binghamton offense with four kills in the frame. Binghamton hit a match-best .398 during the frame to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Bearcats needed just 12 terminations in the third set to complete the sweep after eight UMass Lowell attack errors. The Hovie sisters combined for six kills igniting Binghamton to a 25-18 victory in the final frame.

Binghamton finally returns to Vestal for its home opener on Friday, Oct. 10 against Hartford. The Bearcats begin a six-match homestand against the Hawks playing all of their home contests in a three-week span.

NOTES: Amanda Dettmann eclipsed 3,800 assists in her career against UMass Lowell… Will look to become just third player in program history to record 4,000 assists (Ashley Meffert 4,982, Sarah DeClemente 4,360).
