VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore forward
Logan Roberts had a goal and an assist, powering Binghamton (5-12-0, 3-3-0 AE) to a 5-1 win over Stony Brook (4-12-1, 2-4-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the win, the Bearcats clinched their third straight appearance in the upcoming America East Tournament.
The five goals represents the highest total by the Bearcats since a 5-1 win over Boston University on Oct. 30, 2011. The four goals in the second half is the most goals in a half since they also netted four goals against Houston Baptist on Sept. 4, 2011.
Binghamton broke open a 1-1 tie when Roberts scored in the 47th minute. He finished off a cross from junior midfielder
Tucker Sandercock less than two minutes into the second half.
The Bearcats clung to the one-goal lead until senior forward
Pascal Trappe finished off a cross from senior midfielder
Tommy Moon in the 80th minute. It too was his first goal of the season.
The Bearcats fourth goal was credited as an own goal in the 84th minute. Roberts than fired a cross that was finished off by junior forward
Luca Bottoni in the 88th minute.
"I'm proud of our senior effort tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We've been creating a lot opportunities but we just haven't been scoring. We were really able to put the ball in the goal tonight."
Earlier in the game, junior midfielder
Bret Celeste started the scoring in the 12th minute. He kicked in a rebound from a free kick for his first goal of the year.
In the 32nd minute, however, Alejandro Fritz tied the game when he finished off a cross from the left sideline. It was his third goal of the season and was assisted by Danny Espinoza.
Binghamton outshot the Seawolves 20-15 for the game.
Up next for the Bearcats is their regular-season finale at Albany on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
