VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's soccer team (5-13-1) won the decisive penalty kick shootout 4-3 after playing to a 1-1 tie against Stony Brook (4-13-2) in an America East quarterfinal match on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats now head to Hartford for a semifinal game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Bearcats had to dig deep just to get into overtime. They were down 1-0 when junior midfielder
Tucker Sandercock finished off a cross from sophomore midfielder
Mike Kubik in the 77th minute. It was his first goal of the season.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, Binghamton was in its first penalty kick shootout since 2006.
Though five frames of the shootout, the two squads each made three attempts. In the top of the sixth frame, sophomore goalkeeper
Robert Moewes stopped the attempt by Tavares Thompson. It was his third save of the shootout.
In the bottom of the frame, junior midfielder
Bret Celeste fired the ball into the net giving the Bearcats their first trip to the America East semifinals since 2008.
"I am so proud of our team," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We were resilient enough to get that goal late in the second half and Robert was outstanding in the shootout."
After a scoreless first half, Keith McKenna put the Seawolves up 1-0 in the 47th minute. He finished off a free kick by Thibault Davis for his third goal of the season. It took over 30 minutes but Sandercock's heroics eventually deadlocked the game at 1-1.
