VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Buffalo (8-3) opened the game with a 25-7 run and went on to post a 76-50 win over Binghamton (1-14) Tuesday night at the Events Center. The game was BU's final non-conference game of the season before the Bearcats open America East play Friday at UMass Lowell.
The Bulls, who entered the game No. 19 in the country (NCAA RPI), hit 9-of-12 shots out of the gate to build an 18-point cushion less than halfway through the first period. Buffalo led 40-21 at the break and the Bearcats got no closer than 20 in the second half.
Playing without leading scorer
Dusan Perovic and third-leading scorer
Nick Madray - both out with injuries - BU struggled to score. Freshman forward
Willie Rodriguez tallied 14 points and classmate
Bobby Ahearn contributed a season-high 12 points. But the Bulls put five players in double figures and recorded the Events Center's first triple-double when guard Shannon Evans collected 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
"It was another tough night," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "I knew it would be harder to score the ball without Dusan and Nick ... so we were really trying to focus on holding them down. But we weren't able to do it. To Buffalo's credit, they shot the ball well and made it difficult for us to execute our game plan. It's now time to turn the page. We have a 16-game conference schedule ahead of us and we have to put this behind us quickly and get ready for Lowell on Friday."
Sophomore guard
Yosef Yacob notched eight points and hit 2-of-3 from three-point range. Freshman wing
Justin McFadden added five rebounds and four assists.
