LEWISBURG, Pa.—Junior midfielder Luca Bottoni and sophomore back Charlie Novoth each scored in the second half, leading Binghamton (1-0-0) to a 2-1 win at Bucknell (0-1-0) on Friday night at Emmitt Field. The victory came against a Bison squad that won 13 games last year and returned its top two leading scorers.
Bottoni's goal was the first of his career and came in the 62nd minute. He took a pass from sophomore forward Logan Roberts and fired it into the net from 15 yards out.
Novoth, meanwhile, converted a free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 80th minute. It too was his first collegiate goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Moewes made his first career start and was credited with five saves. The only Bucknell goal was scored by Justin Galiani with just one second left in regulation.
The Bison outshot the Bearcats 16-7 for the game, including a 9-1 margin in the opening 45 minutes. The Bearcats, however, made some halftime adjustments and were able to turn the tide of the match.
"We defended quite well the whole game," head coach Paul Marco said. "But in the second half of the game, we showed a lot more urgency going forward with the ball. I thought Robert was terrific tonight in goal and while we would love to have gotten the shutout, this was a good step forward for our team.
Binghamton hosts Marist in its home opener on Monday at 5 p.m.
NOTES: Including Moewes, the Bearcats had four newcomers in their starting lineup against Bucknell. He was joined by freshmen forwards Isaiah Barrett and Ben Ovetsky as well as freshman back Christian Dam … Binghamton's last season-opening win also came at Bucknell in 2011. The final score was 3-1 and featured a goal by current midfielder Tommy Moon, who is now the team captain.
