VESTAL, N.Y. – Mario Vukadinovic scored with just under five minutes left in the first half, leading unbeaten Marist (2-0-0) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (1-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Monday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss, which marked the Bearcats' home opener, came against a Red Fox squad that has yet to allow a goal this season.
Vukadinovic, who now has a goal and an assist in the first two games, got behind the Bearcat defense and took a pass from M.J. Stellwag. He then tapped the ball into a wide open net from close range.
After being outshot 5-2 in the opening 45 minutes, Binghamton regroup and outshot Marist 7-0 in the second half. Despite several close attempts, however, the Bearcats were unable to get the equalizer.
"Give Marist credit," head coach Paul Marco said. "They got a goal in the first half and were able to hold on. I thought our guys woke up in the second half and played better. But we are disappointed in our effort at home."
The match was held shortly after the athletic department's Welcome Back BBQ for the student-athletes at the adjacent Events Center. As a result, a crowd of 1,225 showed up at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
"We had a terrific crowd tonight," Marco said. "We really appreciated their support and want to thank them for coming out. We will be better next time."
Binghamton heads to the Duquesne Tournament this coming weekend. The Bearcats face the host Dukes Friday at 6 p.m.
