PITTSBURGH, Pa.—Mamadou Traore netted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, leading Duquesne (2-0-1) to a 3-2 win over Binghamton (1-2-0) in a non-conference soccer game on Friday evening at Rooney Field. The game marked the opening round of the Duquesne Invitational.
Troare broke a 2-2 tie when he scored on a scramble in front of the goal. It was his team-high fifth goal of the season.
The Bearcats started off the game strong, taking 2-1 lead at the half. Sophomore forward Alex Varkatsas opened the scoring 3:20 into the match and graduate student midfielder Tommy Moon broke a 1-1 tie with just 22 seconds left before the break.
Varkatsas, whose goal was the first of his career, converted a cross from senior midfielder Steve Celeste. Moon, meanwhile, finished a cross from junior forward Luca Bottoni. Bottoni now has a goal and an assist so far this season.
The Dukes tied the game at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when Frederick Borenstiein scored off a rebound. That set the stage for Traore later in the second half.
"I thought our guys were terrific except in certain moments of the game," head coach Paul Marco said. "Duquesne is a very good team but we are disappointed not to have come away with a better result."
Duquesne was credited with a 19-5 advantage in shots, including a 12-0 margin in the decisive second half.
Binghamton concludes play at the Duquesne Invitational on Sunday against Niagara at 11 a.m.
