Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Senior midfielder Matt McCoy and sophomore forward Alex Varkatzas each scored a goal, leading Binghamton (2-2-0) to a 2-0 shutout of Niagara (1-3-0) in the final round of the Duquesne Men's Soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field. With the win, the Bearcats finish the weekend 1-1 and scored four goals in the process.

McCoy's goal, which was the first of his career, came on a free kick from 30 yards away from the goal. Varkatzas, meanwhile, scored his second goal in as many games when he finished off a cross from sophomore Charlie Novoth in the 79th minute.

Niagara finished the game with a 15-11 shot advantage. Junior goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi and sophomore goalkeeper Robert Moewes, however, combined for six saves to record the Bearcats' first shutout of the season.

"We are happy to get the win but our performance can improve," head coach Paul Marco said. "We did not have a real thirst for the ball today."

Binghamton returns home for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday night against Army.

NOTES: Varkatzas and senior back Jamie Forbes were named to the all-tournament team ... Novoth now has a goal and an assist in the three games he has played. As a team, the Bearcats are averaging 1.50 goals per game.
