VESTAL, N.Y. – Lafayette (2-3-2) defeated Binghamton (2-5-0) 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The game marked the third of a season-high, four-game home stand for the Bearcats.
The Leopard's goal, which came in the 62nd minute, was ruled as an own goal.
Just as big of a story in a wild second half was a pair of missed penalty shots. In the 46th minute, Tom McCutcheon's shot was saved by junior goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi. It marked the first time a BU player has stopped a penalty kick since Jason Stenta against Albany on Oct. 7, 2009.
The tables were turned, however, in the 70th minute. Sandy Leavy, who finished the game with seven saves, stopped a penalty kick by graduate student midfielder Tommy Moon.
Binghamton ended the game with an 11-9 advantage in shots.
"We are disappointed with the outcome," head coach Paul Marco said. "We played well enough to win but we could not get it done in front of the goal. We created our chances but we continue to have trouble finishing them."
Binghamton closes its home stand against nationally-ranked Syracuse on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
