TEMPE, Ariz. – Binghamton split a pair of games in the first day of the Arizona State Tournament on Friday. The Bearcats defeated Toledo 5-4 before losing a valiant 1-0, eight-inning decision to the host Sun Devils, who are currently ranked No. 21 in the NFCA Poll.
Against Toledo, junior first baseman
Griffin McIver and freshman outfielder
Jessica Rutherford each drove in a pair of runs. McIver's two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning broke up a 1-1 tie. Rutherford's two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning stretched the lead to 5-1.
Toledo came back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning but were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Sarah Miller was the winning pitcher.
In the nightcap against Arizona State, junior pitcher
Cara Martin put forth a valiant effort against one of the top teams in the nation on their home field.
She threw seven shutout innings before the international tie breaker rule was installed in the eighth inning. The Sun Devils, already with a runner placed on second base, scored the winning run in the bottom of that frame.
Martin, whose record is now 1-1, allowed only four hits and issued only three walks through 7.1 innnigs.
Binghamton faced third-ranked Michigan at 4 p.m. and the Sun Devils at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday as play continues at the Arizona State Tournament.
