Men's Lacrosse Overpowers UMBC, 13-4, Saturday

BALTIMORE, Md.- The Binghamton men's lacrosse team won, 13-4, at UMBC Saturday afternoon. Tyler Deluca led with a career-high four goals as the Bearcats dominated the America East opener on a rainy afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

After the Retrievers scored the first two goals of the match, BU controlled the action on its way to its second straight road victory. Deluca got the Bearcats on the board, scoring at the 7:30 mark to make it 2-1 in the first period. Less than a minute later, Paul O'Donnell scored to even the match. Dan Mazurek won the ensuing faceoff and bounded in to the offensive zone, hitting Tucker Nelson for a goal and a 3-2 advantage. The score came just six second after the tying goal.

In the second quarter, Deluca extended the BU margin to 4-2 with 11:28 remaining in the half. A few minutes later, J.T. Hauck found Sean Gilroy for a goal and a 5-2 lead. After a Tanner Cosens save and a George Deignan caused turnover, Binghamton found the back of the net once more to expand its advantage. Nelson assisted Deignan for a goal with four seconds showing on the clock.

Coach Scott Nelson's squad continued its stellar play in the second half. Gilroy assisted on a Hauck goal with 13:48 to go in the third frame. UMBC finally broke the 6-0 run with a goal a few minutes later. Deluca then did his best to seal the outcome early. He scored with 10:27 left and then Deluca finished a Nelson assist at the 9:59 mark, giving BU a 9-3 difference.

The Bearcats scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter, as O'Donnell assisted on a Mitchell Rick goal and then O'Donnell scored two straight times to put BU up, 12-3. Ben Kocis and Nelson each assisted on the senior's scores. After a UMBC goal, Matthew Kaser closed out the scoring in the final two minutes.

Binghamton held a 42-23 lead in shots and won 14-20 faceoffs. It collected 31 groundballs, ten more than the hosts.

Deluca scored four goals, while O'Donnell put up three goals and an assist. Nelson tallied a goal and three assists. The senior has now scored at least a point in all 32 games of his Binghamton career. Gilroy and Hauck each added a goal and a helper. Mazurek led with seven groundballs and Joe Grossi picked up six. Cosens recorded eight saves in net, improving to 2-0 as BU's goalie this season.
