Softball splits final two games at NC State Hyatt Place Invitational

Bearcats lose 7-0 to No. 25 Wolfpack before beating Lipscomb 7-5

RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh belted her first career grand slam, highlighting Binghamton's split in its final two games at the N.C. State Hyatt Place Invitational. The Bearcats (9-9) lost 7-0 to the No. 25 Wolfpack on Saturday night but bounced back with a 7-5 win over Lipscomb on Sunday morning.

Against Lipscomb, the Bearcats were trailing 5-3 and were down to their final out in the top of the seventh inning. Harbaugh, however, came up with the bases loaded and drilled the first pitch over the right-center field fence. It was her third home run of the season but her first career grand slam.

Harbaugh's grand slam is the Bearcats' second of the season. Freshman pitcher Sarah Miller hit a walk-off grand slam in the Bearcats' 9-8 win over Campbell back on Feb. 14.

Junior pitcher Cara Martin held the Bison scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning to improve to 4-3. Kelly Young took the loss and is now 4-8.

Earlier in the game against Lipscomb, the Bearcats were down 3-0 but rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Junior catcher Lisa Cadogan hit a two-run home run and freshman outfielder Jessica Rutherford, who finished the day 2-for-3, had a RBI double during the frame.

Cadogan had the Bearcats' only hit in their game against host N.C. State the previous evening. The Wolfpack, meanwhile, were up 1-0 before plating four runs in the top of the third inning and a pair of runs one frame later.

Mirabella Courtney was the winning pitcher, raising her record to 5-3. Martin was tagged with the loss.

N.C. is the third nationally-ranked team the Bearcats have faced this season. Two weekends ago, Binghamton faced then third-ranked Michigan and No. 21 Arizona State.

Junior first baseman Taylor Chaffee batted a team-best .375 during the Bearcats' four games at the N.C. State Hyatt Place Invitational this weekend. Harbaugh hit .364 and is now tied for the team lead with 18 RBI.

Despite hitting only .250 during the weekend, Cadogan homered twice, given her a team-best five home runs so far this season. She too has a team-best 18 RBI.

Binghamton is scheduled to begin America East play next weekend at Hartford. The two team have a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game at noon on Sunday.
