BALTIMORE, Md. - One day after putting nine runs on the board in a tough 13-inning loss, Binghamton baseball had its bats silenced in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of UMBC (10-9, 4-2 America East). The Bearcats (4-12, 1-5 AE) managed just one run on six hits over 16 innings and lost 3-1 and 4-0.
In the seven-inning opener, each team mustered just two hits but the host Retrievers scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third - thanks to a two-out, bases-clearing triple. The inning began with an infield error and also included two walks.
Down 3-0, BU got one run back in the fourth when it registered its two hits on the game. After leadoff hitter
Jake Thomas reached on an error, sophomore designated hitter
Eddie Posavec legged out a two-out bunt single and freshman catcher
Jason Agresti followed with an RBI single, scoring Thomas. But the Bearcats left the bases loaded in the fourth and then were retired in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Binghamton went down 1-2-3 in five of the seven innings. The team's best chance at taking the lead occured in the top of the scoreless third inning when BU put its first two runners on. But a strikeout, fly out and groundout left them stranded.Â
Junior starter
Mike Bunal (L, 1-3) tossed 4.1 innings and allowed no earned runs on two hits. He struck out six and walked four. Freshman reliever
Dylan Stock pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.  Â
In the nightcap, three UMBC pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout and the Retrievers tallied single runs in each of the first, second, fourth and eighth innings for the cushion. Junior first baseman
Kyle Coronel went 2-for-4 and senior center fielder
Zach Blanden and Thomas had one hit apiece.Â
Senior
Greg Ostner (L, 1-4) went the distance, scattering eight hits and four runs over 8.0 innings. He struck out a pair.Â
Binghamton plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Penn State before BU welcomes UMass Lowell for its home-opening series next weekend.Â
