Contact: Dave Van Gorder (dvangord@binghamton.edu)DURHAM, N.H.—The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (6-8, 1-4 America East) tried to come back, but eventually fell short, losing to New Hampshire (5-8, 2-3 America East) 12-9 today.
"I think we fought a good fight," reflected head coach
Stephanie Allen. "We had a lot of opportunities, and were unable to finish some shots. Overall it was a solid game aside from the end of the first half and the start of the second. I was proud that we were able to chip away from their lead, but we ultimately ran out of time."
Binghamton started the scoring, with
Samantha Karner scoring via free position shot three and a half minutes into the game. After UNH scored a pair of goals,
Brianne Arthur notched her first of the game. Arthur's goal tied the score at two, and was the 50th of the sophomore's career.
Callon Williams would then add her first of the game to give BU a 3-2 lead. After another Wildcat goal, Arthur would score on a quick pass from
Sophia Racciatti, as the Bearcats retook the lead 4-3.
The Wildcats would then rattle off four straight goals to take what appeared to be a three goal lead into the half.
Brianne Arthur had different plans though, as she fired a shot into the net with one second left in the half to cut the UNH lead to 7-5 at the break.
New Hampshire would then tally three goals to start the second half. Binghamton used a 4-0 run to tighten the score.
With 18:47 left Binghamton got their first goal of the half, when
Callon Williams cut in front of the net, caught a pass from
Valerie DeNapoli, and fired it in. Less than a minute later, Williams hit a wide open
Brianne Arthur with a pass, and Arthur scored her fourth goal of the game to make it 10-7. A minute and a half later, Williams was set to take a free position shot with a nice angle at the Wildcat goal. Instead the sophomore pulled up and fired a quick pass to Arthur, who bounced a shot past the UNH goalkeeper to cut the Wildcat lead to 10-8.
Tiffany Ryan then made it a one goal game when she worked a give-and-go with
Samantha Karner.
New Hampshire responded by calling timeout, and then scoring two quick goals to stretch the lead back to three with 5:45 left. They would not relinquish the lead, holding on to defeat Binghamton 12-9.
"It definitely stung," admitted Coach Allen. "We were able to take a look at certain areas of our game where we need to make adjustments. It's fixable, but we need to apply the adjustments to a full sixty minutes."
Arthur ended the game with five goals, the third time she's done that in her career (last time being February 25, 2014). It's also her second straight hat trick, and third for 2015.
Binghamton will return to action on Tuesday, April 14 at Colgate.
